Michelangelo day 3

Caprese de Michelangelo is the birth village of the most famous sculptor in the world, Michelangelo Buonorotti...situated about 80k SE of Florence.....A lifelong wish of Mick is to visit it.

The route there is high in the Tuscan hills and 21/2 hrs and thousands of switchbacks later we arrived. We parked outside of the police station there and were given directions to the house. Absolutely no-one was around...not one tourist!!

A short walk up a steep hill to the top of the mountain we entered the area. A building on the edge of the compound served as the library and ticket office. We paid and entered a very quiet and hauntingly serene courtyard...There ahead was his home....We wandered freely into each room, sat at the furniture and studied each historical presentation witha any person to bother us...miraculous!. There are many castings of his as well.  Here is the study of Davids head and hands.
After that we went across the courtyard to the museum where a collection of priceless sculptures donated from around the world...from his time and up to present day. The surrounding garden was also dressed with them as well....quite wonderful.

Courtyard area

Bell tower of San Giovani.....the bells are from 1157!!

Church where he was baptised

We spent over 3 hours there ...it was so peaceful and so satisfying....especially for Mick....A dream come true.....after all it is his namesake! ....And both artists to boot!
Time to move on and back to Florence ........We found the most awesome little family hotel very near the city centre.....we booked the suite....aaaahhh....again a lavish expence but soooo worth it. Here we are pampered to death and ready for the BIG one tomorrow...David!!!
